A Programmable Thermostat is the Key to Comfort and Savings in Your Moore County Home

  • October 08, 2013

Did you know that the average American family spends more than 40 percent of its utility expenses in heating and cooling? That may seem like a lot, but you’re probably feeling every cent. Energy efficiency may seem like a chore, but it can actually be really simple. Regular maintenance is key, but there are things you can do, too. If you buy a programmable thermostat and use it wisely, you can save energy and money, while keeping your home even more comfortable.

Options

These days, the sky’s the limit when it comes to saving energy. You can buy a basic programmable thermostat that has a few settings throughout the day. For example, you can choose a temperature for during the day, another while you’re away, and other settings for the evening and at night. Depending on your budget, you can get other features, as well. Most programmable thermostats offer different settings for weekends or vacations. Some allow you to change the settings from your smartphone or computer. A few so-called “smart programmable thermostats” can adapt the best settings for your home based on your preferences.

Practical Use

A programmable thermostat will only save you money and energy if you use it wisely. These tips can help:

  • Time the temperature to change before you need it. The thermostat may need up to 30 minutes to adjust the temperature efficiently.
  • Select reasonable temperatures. You may be just as comfortable with the thermostat set 3-4 degrees lower if you put on a sweater, or the same amount higher if use a ceiling fan.
  • Set it and forget it. Programmable thermostats are most efficient in eight-hour blocks. More than that erodes your energy savings. Otherwise, try to avoid using the override feature or changing the temperature by more than a few degrees, as both of these things decrease efficiency and put stress on your equipment.
