Is Your Home’s Ductwork Asking for a Professional Cleaning?
- May 23, 2015
Because ducts are sealed and often pass through inaccessible areas of your home, it can be difficult to tell what’s going on inside them. Dust and other pollutants can build up inside and be carried throughout your home, which can impact your health. Debris can also build up inside the ducts, blocking airflow to parts of your home. Duct cleaning can tackle those issues and make your home’s indoor air healthy again.
Signs a Duct Cleaning May Be Warranted
If you’re worried about whether or not your home needs duct cleaning, look for these surefire signs.
- Visible dust coming from vents and registers – Airflow from your ducts can stir up dust throughout your home. If you see a stream coming from inside the ducts, it’s a good bet there’s more where that came from. A buildup of dust in ductwork can also suggest structural damage or a rupture in a segment of ducting.
- Signs of rodent or insect infestation – Mice or rats can breach your ductwork, especially when it travels through the attic, basement spaces or crawl spaces in your home. They appreciate it for the security from predators, but their droppings can cause significant health issues. If you can hear animal noises from inside your ducts, get them cleaned.
- Visible mold in accessible duct locations or a persistent musty or mildew smell – The cool darkness of your ductwork provides ample space for mold, mildew and fungus to grow if sufficient humidity is present, and all of these can be health risks. A professional duct cleaning can get rid of these colonies, but you’ll also need to look into humidity control for your home. An ultraviolet (UV) light in your ductwork can also help by sterilizing the spores as they pass through, preventing them from creating more colonies elsewhere in your home.
