How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint and Save Money This Winter
- December 21, 2015
In Aberdeen, NC and the surrounding areas, winter often comes with high energy bills. Fortunately, you can save money heating your home this winter and help the environment at the same time. Here are some of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint without sacrificing your comfort in winter.
Have Your Heating and Air Conditioning System Serviced Regularly
Get a yearly routine inspection done on your heating and air conditioning system by a professional. Regular maintenance helps systems stay efficient and last longer before replacement is necessary. If your heater or air conditioner is more than 10 years old, you can save money over time by replacing it with a newer model that will save even more energy. Schedule a Home Performance Evaluation with Comfort Services, Inc. to help you decide on the best model and get customized recommendations on how to save money and reduce your carbon footprint.
Use Solar Heating
Anyone can get free, renewable energy from the sun. Open window shades on sunny days to take advantage of heat and light.
If you have the means at your disposal, then you also could consider solar panels. Enough solar panels can generate almost all the energy for your home. Many types blend in very well with asphalt, tile, slate, or metal roofs. You can also install solar panels in a yard or garden. Change their positions at different seasons to catch the most sun. Some even move automatically throughout the day.
Add a Solar Water Heater
It’s not always sunny outside, but solar water heaters can still save energy by supplementing conventional water heaters. They have two main parts, a solar collector and an insulated storage tank. Direct circulation systems pump water through the solar collector and into the storage tank. They work better in warmer climates. Indirect circulation systems pump a heat transfer fluid that can’t freeze through the solar collectors and a heat exchanger, thereby heating the water. Less expensive passive solar water heaters circulate water through gravity.
