How Do Heat Pumps Work?
A heat pump is simply a modified version of an air conditioner. Both use refrigerant to create a heat exchange process that will moderate the air temperature in your home. In an AC unit, refrigerant is pressurized outside the home. At high pressures, the material boils at lower temperatures, and the boiling material is moved into the home. Inside, the pressure is released, and the expanding material becomes icy. The indoor air is cooled and the refrigerant moves through the coils to begin the process anew. In a heat pump, this process is reversible so that the boiling and heating occur inside the home.
