Boost Indoor Air Quality to Make Your Home a Haven in the Heat
- August 12, 2013
When you retreat inside your house during the hottest days of summer, you want the space in your home to be a comfortable, safe haven. Unfortunately when the mercury rises, the high temperatures and humidity that drive you into your home can increase pollutant levels.
Follow these three strategies to boost indoor air quality:
- Identify the source. Identifying and reducing or eliminating sources of pollution in your home is the most effective way to boost indoor air quality. Adjust combustion appliances like gas stoves and water heaters to reduce emissions, and have pollutants like asbestos professionally removed.
- Improve ventilation. Ventilation is important on summer’s hottest days to control the temperature in your home and boost indoor air quality. The air inside your home is two to five times more polluted than air outside. Bringing fresh air inside on hot days by opening windows and doors in the early morning and evening when weather cools can boost air quality and help control cooling costs. Window and attic fans can also increase outdoor air ventilation. Energy efficient heat recovery ventilators offer whole-house ventilation that will not only boost indoor air quality, but keep your home comfortable as well.
- Clean the air. Air cleaners improve air quality by removing particle pollutants from the air such as mold, allergens, viruses and smoke. Whole-house purifiers are more effective than tabletop varieties, and can be added to your HVAC system or inserted directly into air ducts. Features such as HEPA technology, carbon filtration, and UV light can make them more effective. True HEPA filters remove 99.97 percent of particles 0.3 micron and larger, small enough to get easily into, but not out of breathing passages. Air cleaners with carbon filters help remove gaseous pollutants, which air cleaners typically do not remove. Air filter and UV light combos help trap and kill viruses and bacteria.
